A dwagon gets a case of Insomnia

Hello everyone,

I’ve been off to another of those gaming festival thingys … This time it was a fun weekend in Birmingham at the Insomnia Gaming Festival. It’s been going a few years now, starting form humble beginnings of a LAN* party, growing a bit by happening out of I think it was Coventry football stadium and they now run the show out of the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.

Picture. Meme. We're looking at a white dog and a black dog, in an inflatable red car floating in the sea. The captions are "In life it's not where you go" and "It's who you travel with"

(Urg – looks like they’ve changed the image linking / insertion thing, if it goes funny I’ll fix)

* A LAN is a local area network, it’s a term from the olden days where we’d need to bring computers together in the same location and wire them all together with cables in order to play the multiplayer games. That’s like … before broadband internet, before wifi, before online servers. Insomnia still does the LAN area, it’s their own dedicated area off to the side of the main show where people can take their gaming rigs and play together. You can read more about Insomnia on their site (Linky), next show is in September.

I was hoping to meet up with a few more people in the streaming world in and around the show (spoiler – that happened, made me happy) plus there’s usually lots more to see around shows like this.

Picture. We're looking out from a hotel room over the car park half in shadow. There are trees with brown leaves below a horizon filled with dark cloud, with a double rainbow emerging from the centre

Friday saw me settling into the hotel before planning munchies … One thing I’d like to do with these events is to link up with more people for dinner afterwards but for this one, it was good to take myself off somewhere on my own around Birmingham. (The Fort shopping centre has some good eating places) And … Barr Beacon gave potential for testing the camera out at night, which was maybe a bit too much adventure. Let’s see :

Picture. It's full night time and we're looking out over the varied coloured dots and lights of Birmingham. Above, we see a dark night sky with a few white clouds

That’s a … handheld shot. At night. The camera was saying no to taking pictures of the stars (think I know why) but on the way out of Barr Beacon, I thought I’d try seeing what one of the automatic settings could do. And there we go. Even on the full resolution, the dots are pretty sharp. Happy with that. The adventure was supposed to see me drive all the way up to the war memorial up there but, the gate was shut (it shouldn’t have been) and I only walked a little way up there. There was one car parked off the path, plus more vehicles active further up too. I didn’t want to get anywhere near them cos I like life, so I set up with the tripod safely away from them.

A good little adventure but it seems quite tough to get to places with a good view of the sky at night, partly due to the parking areas being closed off, partly due to Safety. I didn’t go all the way up to the war memorial due to feeling unsafe and this was repeated by tales from one of the streamer people trying to get to their hotel. Gotta take care where you’re going in the cities these days.

Picture. We're looking between two leaf less trees at a lake. There is a fountain between the two trees, with a dark green lawn in front.

My Insomnia day was the Saturday, lovely sunny day too. I was on a priority ticket as a bit of learning from MCM – priority entry means less queue, which gave lots of time to wander around the show. And there was a little chilled out munchie before going in. One side note there, it’s really important to have your fluids with you at shows like this. The atmosphere can be really hot so it’s important to stay hydrated. I must have gotten through at least 3 refills of the bottle that my Comic Con friend bought me (more than!) a few years ago. My legs survived too (after extreme bad cramp at Comic Con) and I’d note that there were very visible first aiders standing by in case people got into trouble, that’s definitely appreciated.

Picture. We're looking out over a crowd of people inside the hall. In the centre, a lovely smiling lady in a red apron representing Yorkshire Tea.

Yorkshire Tea brought the sustenance. Free tea ! Much appreciated. My highlights of the day were getting to meet Tashnarr (twitch link) again, not just once but three times ! One of which included a lovely natter from this wonderful individual. She is working for the people who organise Insomnia now, so was being a busy bee on the day.

The other massive highlight was seeing Session Zero on the main stage doing a live Dungeons and Dragons style role play show. They are Josh Strife Hayes as the Game Master, plus Ragedarling playing a barbarian and Billietrixx as a sorceror. Pictures ?

Picture. We're looking at the Insomnia stage with two people with right arms raised exhorting the crowd with their fists. Josh is in a white shirt, light blue waistcoat. Rage is in boots, with exposed thighs below a belt with a red cloth with a waistcoatted top below bright red hair. She has a massive war hammer

There’s Josh and Ragedarling …

Picture. We're looking at the Insomnia stage again. Back and right is Josh again, Ragedarling is on a sofa in the background. Centre stage is Billietrixx looking down at the crowd with left hand outstretched, with a staff held in her right hand. She has a full length dress, with a superb bodice completing the look.

And there’s sorceress Billietrixx looking resplendent (with shiny new outfit upgrade too).

There were too many pictures to post here but the better ones are all on the Session Zero Twixxer thread (Linky). It was a massively fun show to watch, there was massive audience involvement, much daft, much enjoyment and I’ll definitely be looking out for when they’re doing more shows.

Picture. This is the meet and greet area of Insomnia, with the Session Zero people posing for pictures. Left to right is Ragedarling, hefting her hammer, Special Guest, Josh and Billie is on the right.

And after the show and a lovely little natter with Tashnarr on the way (there is a selfie, it’s not for the internet :-D), I had a chance to say hi to them after their Meet and Greet. There’s a fourth person there, their name didn’t lodge in my head but they were a wonderful special guest for the show. I’ve met Billie before at Creator North, was great to see them here again.

And they all loved the pictures too. That gives me a happy buzz too. This was the first time I’d taken the new R50 camera out to a show like this and I think it did really well. It’s almost an entry level for the higher class of cameras (it’s a mirrorless) but what it gave me on the automatic settings and mostly handheld (or braced on the knee) were an absolute revelation compared to what I was getting from the Ixus. I think the pictures look amazing, hopefully I’ll see them again if people think they’re good enough to use for later material.

But … my social batteries were hitting their limits later on in the day so I disappeared before the end. It was a lovely weekend. I’ve been struggling with my mental health lately (mostly from being worn down) and meeting the following gave me a very happy buzz that kicked me back off into having a much more positive mental state :

Tashnarr – as always, lovely bean. She helped organise a wonderful show and I should be back for the next Insomnia.

Billietrixx & Ragedarling (and Josh!) off Session Zero – the show was huge fun to watch. I’ve been watching Billie for about a year, Rage for about a month or so. They have a lovely energy that comes through their streams and it’s infectious. They’re good people to watch.

MiyukiPanda – a first surprise running into. Miyuki is a huge fan of racing and will often be seen streaming games like the F1 games or there was also the Lego racing game. Miyuki has a selfie of me too which is on her discord but I got this pic of Miyuki with the show mascot :

Picture. We're looking at the Insomnia show floor. Standing on a blue carpet is a very cute lady with red/brown hair with a yellow cap, smiling off to my right. She's standing beside a purple hexagon character with a bit eye.

I also ran into Saffypie, Peachypixel8, Josh aka Gamingftl and Bentham aka Mangledpork after the show. I’d met Josh and Bentham before but this was first time seeing Saffy and Peachy. And got hugs. They gave me the idea of heading to Nandos … Hope they enjoyed their dinner as much as I did mine :-D.

I did miss running into one little group though, which was Dontrachquit heading round the show with a few of her community. There will be a next time there :-D. Rach is another fun streamer lady from Scotland who I’ve been enjoying watching again lately. I missed spotting her at the show but was enjoying seeing the little updates that were popping up on discord.

I’m now looking ahead to the Summer events … I’ll be taking the camera to Lords for the Interservices T20 in May, looking forward to that, plus maybe MCM Comic Con at the end of May too. However, the general buzz from enjoying Insomnia has me turning the maybe maybe not for Twitch Con is turning into a lot more interest. Hopefully I’ll be able to tag along with some of the communities for that, as that would make that experience so much better. We’ll see. Current plans are a road trip and a ferry. I’m not a fan of air travel, seems like a lot of restrictions and a definite too many people in the airport. Ferry would allow for a nice bit of chill out time in the middle with more room and very few restrictions.

Loot ? I did take away a bit of loot …

Picture. We're looking at a shop window. In the centre, there is a metal dragon figurine sitting on a shelf. He has his front paws folded in front of his chest and is wearing an expression translating as "Humph"

Not that fella, although it was a very close run thing. (Too late in the day so Brain was a bit fried, plus I don’t know where I’d put something that size) Nah, I came away with these :

Picture. We're looking at a set of pink orange dice, on top of a presentation box. A card saying "Trayed and Tested" is to the left, our dwagon is to the right. The background is light blue above my wooden desk.

The dice are from Trayed and Tested and there’s a link to their Etsy shop. So all in all, wonderful weekend. It was great to get away for the Insomnia show and I’ll definitely be looking to do that again. It would be good to be in with more community next time but it was lovely seeing the shows and meeting up with the people I did see (including a random oneOnline!)

And it gave me a reset for my mental state leading to a very happy buzzing, especially hearing that all the people got home ok ! I do worry about the good people and it was good to hear they all returned safe and sound.

I’ll leave it there, I dropped more pictures on the Session Zero Twixxer link above. Time for me to put some dinner on while enjoying chilling to Tashnarr painting a miniature (Peachy is on as well at the moment, in Cities Skylines).

Comic Con and other travels

Hello everyone,

I’ve been off to Comic Con again ! It was a run to London MCM Comic Con on Friday just gone. Pretty good day out overall, although that was with its ups and downs. But first ! The thumbnail. Let’s see what it’ll be …

Picture. We're looking at two flat pieces of pale wood. Burned into the top one is a cute dragon looking at us, sitting on his haunches with front paws between back paws. The caption is "Have you hugged your dragon today?" The lower one is a cute dragon standing up, short arms to the sides, holding hands on sticks to make their hug wider. The caption here is "I love you THIS much!"

I saw those at Scorch’s Pyrography stall and knew I needed to take them home with me. Very cute. After using an AI assisted picture for Halloween, I’ve now turned the top one there (Have you hugged your dragon) into my latest avatar.

The day started with me rushing in to try and meet someone before she had to disappear. I had a Thing that I needed to drop off and she wasn’t going to be there that long after my ticket would let me in. London’s always a slightly awkward place to travel around in a car. The trick is to go in just far enough to swap to the Underground and then you go the rest of your way from there. The Underground has always worked really well for me, although certain stations (Baker Street) and peak travel times make me very nervous about being around too many people. And that’s from the Before Times too, when we only had to worry about pickpockets.

So this time, I head in via the Westfield next to the Shepherds Bush stations. It’s a big shopping centre with a massive (and cheap) car park, so it’s a good place to drop off the car and change to train. It also allowed me to pick up something for the Shenanigan. I don’t think I’ll be using Westfield too much more though, one of the downs of the day was the last mile or so getting in and the trip out to the motorway again. It’s probably a bit too far in to London and traffic was nasty on the way out.

As usual for Comic Con, there were some amazing outfits on display.

Picture. A slightly blurry image that doesn't do justice to the lady's outfit. She's wearing a floor length dress, the centre panel is light coloured with patterns of roses. The outer section is light red. She's carrying a big axe, with hearts and more roses. Her hat is emblazoned with more roses.
Definitely a Queen of our Hearts

Absolutely stunning, I hope she managed to get to the drink and munchie she was on the way to when I interrupted her. (I was taking a quick stop too before my legs exploded).

Not the lady I wanted to catch before disappearing though. I’m not going to say who that is here. I’m not sure she wanted it known that she was going to be there that day. I have pictures but I’m similarly keeping those off the internet because while I think they’re some of the better ones I got that day, she doesn’t like them :-D.

Always respect people’s wishes like that.

This particular lady’s going through some rough moments currently. Hopefully she can get to bouncing and dancing around again soon and that the pain subsides to tolerable levels quickly too. She’s a very special one and you always hope that people like that are feeling up to brightening up the days of people they’re around, because of the wonderful people they are at their core.

So while she’s having the rough times, I hope I balanced that a bit with the gift that brightened up the day. The chat we had definitely brightened up my day and I was floaty happy Sleepy for most of it.

And that’s what we should all do where we can, enable people to be the best they can be. Enable them to have a better day. And when we’re not having a great day ourselves, then if we’re around the right people they can enable us to feel a bit better. And we respect what they want or need to do as well.

We all have vulnerable times, we all have times when we’re not feeling too good whether that’s from physical, mental or other kinds of illness. It’s up to us to enable people to feel better, whether that’s celebrating their wins, or giving them that metaphorical hug when they’re down. The “Thinking of you, hope you’re ok, feel better soon, you Matter.”

Oh ! I got more loot on Friday too …

Picture. We're looking at a t-shirt, with a grey haired fox standing up. He has a sword in his right paw, in his left is a very long scroll. He's between trees to the left and right. The caption is "I'm not procrastinating, I'm doing side quests"

It was a bit different going round Comic Con this time, without my usual Comic Con Friend. You kind of bounce off each other there. One person sees something fun, tells the other, both enjoy it. And vice versa for other things that might not have been spotted. Always taking pictures too. Maybe even a bit of helping each other when the physical-ness of the day might be getting too much.

Yep, I had to take breaks a lot :-D. I started cramping up fairly early, the Excel Arena is a bit overheated, especially with that many people inside. I didn’t quite heed the signs early enough and ended up with my legs locking on me a couple of times and probably microtears in the calf muscles that have only just about recovered. So after I’d been round once, it would have been good to head around again but the Homing Instinct kicked in and I was on my way.

It would be good to do one of these with a Comic Con Friend again. Hopefully my usual Comic Con Friend is feeling better now, she’s also been going through the Life Stuff and has been ill. Feel better soon ! It would have been lovely to see what you made of what was around at the show. Like …

Picture. We're looking at a display area with several people milling around. Taking centre shot is a display stand with a yellow creature built from blocks. It has white and black eyes, a black nose and red cheeks. The caption below is "nanoblock", they're a Pokemon Pikachu about 50cm high made from blocks.
PIKA !

Other loot I picked up was :

CAKE – there’s always cake. It was good cake too.

Lego Lightsaber – this will probably be in another post at some point.

More t-shirt – the other one is about mimics

Happy smiles. (I think there was more too).

So there we go, I’ve named the picture folder “Comic Con London 2023” in perhaps a hopeful thing. There’s another MCM Comic Con coming in Birmingham at the start of December. I am very tempted. But what I’m also tempted by is a cruise up the Norwegian coast starting and finishing at Tilbury Docks in London. That would be in a couple of weeks and in an older person (as in not kids) oriented cruise line. That might have to happen, if I can break free of the timid tendencies that have crept in over the last 10 years or so.

Might need to look at camera solutions if I do that Northern Lights cruise. I like my Ixus 265 but it’s got a tendency to blur … I’d need to look at vibration damping for it as it’s very sensitive to the small hand movements.

That’s another day, back to remembering a lovely lady blessing me with a little bit of her time on Friday before she had to rush off. I hopefully brightened her day with the Thing In Box, she definitely brightened my day.

And that’s where I’ll leave it today. If you can, help someone out. Enable them to do something they’ll enjoy. Give them a bit of confidence that they’re appreciated and they Matter.

If you’ve reached this part of the post, you most definitely Matter to me. Thank you for reading :-).

In the North, with creators

Hello everyone,

I had an away trip over the weekend … It was for an event called Creator North, run by the ever bouncy adorable bundle of fun that is Tashnarr, the effervescent Billietrixx, the lovely LookitsTilly and Maddog, assisted with the cameras by Brookie.

I don’t have many pictures of the event itself (was enjoying talking to people a bit too much) but … the weekend involved a bit of wander around Sheffield and this fella happened :

Picture. We're looking at a small red dwagon with a white chest sitting on a laptop keyboard, with a screen behind showing a chat window. The dwagon is made out of thread, woven into life.
Yep. I did a rescue

Links time ? Lots of links. The event itself has a home here : https://creatornorth.uk/#page-top

It’s an event that came about to be a gathering point for creators who weren’t able to make it to other events. Almost all of the creator events that happen in the UK are concentrated around London, or maybe a bit of Scotland’s two cities too. There are events at Birmingham NEC but most of them, like the Twitch events and the EGX gaming expo have moved to London. That’s less than ideal for a lot of people. Actually including me and I live in the South too. So our fab foursome set up Creator North as a meet up for creators living in the North of the UK.

And although I’m South and it was 180 miles away for me, I thought I’d take the chance to meet these wonderful people and add that little bit of support to the day. I’m really glad I did too, it was a very enjoyable little event. Cozy and still with a lot of lovely people.

So who were the organisers ?

There’s Tashnarr (Twitch link), who doesn’t stream so much now but it’s always fun when she can find the time outside of organising other events. Tashnarr is an adorable little bean and it’s been a treat to be able to follow those streams. Although there is that … guilt? feeling (not sure it’s guilt) where you missed out on so much of their earlier content due to just simply not knowing about them. You might also recognise the name from such things as …

Game screenshot. Elite Dangerous. We're looking at a somewhat diamond shaped spaceship. There are two engine pods at the back (top of shot), a notch where the pilot is at the front and two long antenna like things at the corners. The ship is dominated by the reflection of a sun but we can see blue with yellow highlight colouration. In the background, the disc of the galaxy.

That’s Zoomnarr, the ship which was my third attempt at speed running to the Galactic Core in Elite Dangerous. I do like to do tribute names for people with my spaceships (it gives me an excuse to say nice things about them). Zoomnarr was the second ship named for Tashnarr after the rather weakly named Grabnarr and then the rather better named Manic Minarr followed. It’s a sign of how high I regard this lovely one that three tribute ships happened 😀 (Oh and I thought of Manic Minarr and that pun had to happen).

Next one up is Billietrixx (twitch link again), I’ve only been following Billie for apparently 9 months now (that’s how long the Twitch sub has run) and found her through raiding into Tashnarr’s channel and Tash raiding into Billie. That’s how most of the cross connections happen, people you like raiding other people that they like. (When a streamer finishes, they’ll raid over to another channel to give their audience someone fun to continue watching) Billie another one who brings her own special energy to the streams, it’s mad, maybe a little manic but always passionate about the game and enjoying the game with chat. Pleasure to watch, fun to natter to via stream chat. And a lovely one to introduce the event to everyone on Saturday.

It was a pleasure chatting with Billie, Tashnarr and we need to mention LookitsTilly (Twixxer link) who organises events, is a lovely Twitch mod and was also a pleasure to talk to on Saturday. And then there’s Maddog (Twixxer link), if you play any of the Guitar Hero type games, you may be using his song request bot …

And I also got to meet Bentham again, aka Mangledpork (here’s his Twitch). He’s a lovely gent, I’ve been steadily realising that me and him resemble each other a lot (if not in appearance, there’s a picture on the Creator North discord of Bentham accidentally looking way more dapper than I ever will). Bentham likes his factory and crafting games. He’s currently playing Valheim and I so nearly would be watching now if not for another new person to me from Creator North called Curlylocks.

When CausticPhoenix finishes up (hi Caustic!) in a minute, I’ll head over to the Curly one. Who’s Caustic ? Here’s the old Twixxer link. Most of the time I see Caustic, she’ll be hosting a working stream but Caustic will also get super passionate and drawn into gameplay streams. So passionate it leads to super excitable (and hilarious) clip moments for victories, scares and the unexpected. Caustic has a few fingerprints on this blog too after dropping in a few comments, hugely appreciated. I need to get back to applying some more of those comments too. Constant improvement is always good.

So, that was Creator North ! Lovely meet up, very glad I went up there to Sheffield for it. Would totally do it again. Hopefully they can put another one on soon.

Other things about the trip ? I could do without the behaviour on the roads at the moment, Friday saw a lot of inexplicable stop start traffic. Like the outside lane suddenly just stopping … That’s supposed to be the fast lane. Other drivers will also make it awkward for you to get past, by speeding up as you’re going past them. They’ll be doing (I’m being charitable) 60, you’re going past at the 70 speed limit, they’ll speed up to match you. And worse behaviour. I don’t get it, drivers shouldn’t get involved with other drivers like that. I like to think of my awareness as a box of 9 (3 by 3, you’re in the centre) when I’m driving. When people go outside of that box, I don’t care about them any more unless they’ve identified themselves for special attention. And then I’ll keep an eye out for shenanigans.

But yeah, behaviour on the roads is poor, mostly because other drivers seem to insist on getting the better of other drivers. I really don’t get it.

Hotel for the weekend was Novotel. It was a nice room with all the facilities (that I don’t use, just had water) plus secure parking. Staff were nice, full of smiles. But … I think I got overcharged for breakfast and parking (double charge for 2 nights stay), which is what I’ll remember of Novotel. There are other chains, I’ve never been overcharged on the work trips with the other chains.

Sheffield was a good city to have a wander around. It’s a little odd in that the main shopping areas are split. Most cities have their shopping area all clustered around one place. Moor Market was a good one to check out, plus there was a festival with a stand with the Rescue Dwagon you can see up top.

So that was my weekend ! It was lovely to see everyone at Creator North. Little events are just right for me. Too many people trip something that might be social anxiety ? Dunno there, perhaps it’s splitting attention between so many people.

Anyway, Creator North was great. Oh ! I haven’t mentioned yet ! There was cake.

Drawing. One of mine so it's a bit crude. A large cup cake is on a table to the right. To the left, a forlorn looking green dwagon is standing on tip toes with chin and paws resting on the table. The cake is out of reach. The dwagon is thinking "Caaaaaake"

The cake was lush. The people were lovely. And it was great to meet a bunch of people that I’ve only known from the other side of the screen.
