Book 20 – a Story of Battletech (plus more from the weekend)

Is it cheeky claiming the story of a game as a book ?

Perhaps. Some games are blurring the line there though. Either it’s a game that’s more about the story or it’s a visual novel with gameplay elements within. And then there are the old Fighting Fantasy style books that were a game in a book.

But Battletech … a common element of strategy games like this will be to use a story to tie together the missions perhaps with a good few randomly generated missions thrown in too for either padding the game length out or to give your people something to do between story missions to make them stronger.

I’m going to start off with a : The story isn’t awful.

That’s a really bad thing to say about it isn’t it …. The story in Battletech starts off brightly with you having to flee the planet where you are employed, escaping just ahead of a coup. It is a classic set up where the bad guys take over at the start and your role is to gather strength so you can counter usurp them later. Oh and the bad guys are really really bad. Our people are plucky mercenaries pretty much on the neutral side of neutral. But we’re getting paid the big bucks to help out the former leader of the Aurigan Reach.

I definitely enjoyed the game … but there is some real boneheaded stuff in the backstory leading through. Sometimes it feels like characters are doing stupid things just to kick off elements of the story.

Mind you, the movie Interstellar was just like that as well and that’s a film I’ll watch repeatedly. Sure, the set up is nasty but what they do with that is fantastic.

There’s good voice acting here, I actually thought it was Maggie Q playing the leader for a while.

So Battletech – a great game, story could have been better as it reached its end but then the aim of the story in these games is to set up great missions and I think it does that. It may actually prompt me to look at some Battletech books. A while ago, I read the Mechwarrior Dark Age – Ghost War book by Michael Stackpole and highly enjoyed it.

But I’m not likely to go straight back in to replay the campaign. I’m actually more likely to replay MechCommander 2 from a good few years ago.

To the weekend ?

I needed the recovery time from Lords. My legs were definitely feeling that. And then I go straight into an all nighter watching Le Mans. Not as good a race this year as the racing has been. Let’s see :

Toyota were unchallenged and their only reliability issue this year was an error in the head of one of the drivers when he missed his “You need to pit now” and almost ran out of fuel.
Jenson Button’s car decided to throw a bad sensor, which put them 50 laps behind. They were racing hard when they got back in the race but the car expired about 90 minutes before the end. A shame. Hope he’s back next year.
Aston Martin’s car just didn’t work for them this year. They said it was very good with speed and handling up to a certain point … where it felt like it was hitting a brick wall. So the Aston Martins came nowhere. Hope they figure that one out.

Gaming – finished Battletech ! See above.
Finished Motorsport Manager too, with the last few races of the season. The other teams were keeping me honest by making sure I couldn’t get away without thinking through strategy for the last few races but my team still reigned supreme. This is a snowballing type of game, where if you set things up right, the team will continue to march ahead of the competition. That gets boring …

All nighter ? I managed to stay awake for the whole of the race ! I wouldn’t recommend that. I think the hallucinations were starting to come in at about 9pm last night and I was definitely feeling it even by around 4pm yesterday.

I may have ordered more Lego too.

The laptop replacement is being pushed right again. The place I’d get it from have pushed the price up by £50 and that definitely tips it over into “ain’t worth it”. Oh and one of the issues with the last one where I thought the screen was burning out has been fixed by ……. turning the brightness up.

Back to work tomorrow ! More chill out tonight.

Sporty Saturday. And Thursday. And Sunday.

Le Mans today !

Actually been quite busy over this week, although busy actually means “busy recovering” for some of that.

Wednesday was a business trip, Thursday was Lords. Friday was recovering from Lords (left house at 7am, got back in at 1am, needed until about 3.30am until sleep would be reasonable). Saturday morning currently sees me watching the build up to Le Mans on the telly* and the cricket in another window on my desktop as I type. I also have the Idle Champions game running in yet another window. Having sport on my desktop means no gaming … but that doesn’t exclude the simple clicker game.

Cricket will continue until probably 7pm, at which point I’ll head off to acquire pizza while I have Le Mans paused for catching up later in the myriad advert breaks. Le Mans racing will go from about 2.30pm to 2.30pm tomorrow.

*Cricket on desktop, Le Mans on telly ? Hopefully it has improved but in previous years it has proved a nightmare to watch the Eurosport on computer. You usually have to buy another subscription for something I already have a subscription to watch. Not doing that.

Lords ?

Was looking great as usual. There was a light drizzle as I arrived, heading through the back of the ground to the main stadium. Off to the left is the Nursery practice ground with that curiously modern Media Centre (wiki link) opened in 1999. Crikey, almost 20 years ago already.

Home of cricket putting its best sides forward, despite the drizzly start. They did very well to get play happening on time.

Army batting first against Navy bowling. It was a tight start but the Army batsmen broke out of the shackles later on to score 149.

As is usual for these, click for bigger. Most of the pictures are from my Canon Ixus 265 compact digital camera, which I love. A picture like the one above was taken at full optical zoom (16x) with it braced rather agriculturally on my knee. It’s great for these long shots when it has that bracing, not so much for close shots where the focusing isn’t quite quick enough to cut out any shake or motion blur. I do like it when I get the timing right to get the ball in shot though.

Navy celebrate the fall of another Army wicket.

A comfortable crowd providing a little bit of atmosphere. These games pull in a few people, both from Interservices support (like me!) and a few Lords regulars who want to watch the cricket in a great stadium. They open up the Mound and Tavern stands to the public but not the other stand on the other side. The Pavilion is for members only. Smart people. Not me !

We had drama throughout the day, including here where the fielder looks perplexed and more than a tad frustrated after his efforts to secure an excellent running in catch were wiped away by it being a no-ball for the bowler overstepping.

Half time and we’re off to hunt down some tea.

Pitch must have been nicely lively.

Especially with the Army bowlers lobbing in grenades.

We had a minute of silence observed on Thursday for the Grenfell Tower Block disaster. The teams paused the game a few minutes early to line up in front of the Pavilion.

And the crowd stood in their own mark of respect. A wonderfully observed minute of silence and I’d particularly note how everyone anticipated it, like this picture being taken a couple of minutes before with everyone standing in respect already. It was more like a 5 minutes of silence.

Back to the cricket and the Army celebrate a steady fall of Navy wickets. This time a batsman looking rather perplexed at being given lbw.

An aggressive stride ! But I don’t the ball has gone quite where he intended … To steal a phrase from history, “What’s wrong with our bats today ?” “Sir, I don’t think they’re using their bats.” Navy come a distant third, losing by 42 runs.

The winners get a break in this tournament with the losers staying on for the second game, so next up was the Navy vs the RAF.

RAF started brighter but the wickets started coming again. This opener got a tickly one.

RAF get 149 again, time for the Navy to take their turn. They have an ok side but haven’t been in the same league as RAF or Army for the last few years.

Lots of ambition though.

But they could never keep up with the rate as the wickets fell and were well short at the end. RAF win by 49.

There is no lonelier figure in cricket than the Number 11 batsman walking away from shattered stumps at the moment of defeat.

Time for another break and the best tea shop in Lords ! It’s under the new Warner stand.

Game 3 ! Army vs RAF, winner gets the trophy. The RAF batted well here with power and occasional skill :

A subtle guiding of the ball and the RAF finish on 147. Time for the Army !

The Army walked into a bit of a stranglehold, struggling to get any runs away. This was representative of the energy shown by the RAF in the field, appealing vigorously for this lbw. His partner was out shortly after and the Army continually struggled to get up with the run rate.

More subtlety on show, this time from the Army batsmen guiding the ball down to the boundary.

And more lusty blows. Oh and look !!!! SHADOWS !!!!!!! The sun was hiding for most of the day but came out to play a bit later.

It was not to be for the Army though this year as wickets continued to fall, like the sharp stumping above. (I’m especially happy with this shot, the focus is decent, the centreing is reasonable and …. flying bails !)

At the conclusion of proceedings, handshakes all round. Recognition of great play and sportsmanship all round. RAF come out the winners with tea and medals following soon after.

The results weren’t particularly close or tense like in previous years but it was a very enjoyable day at the cricket again. The old master can be proud again of what he overlooked :

I’ll be back again to say hello to Lords and Old Father Time.

Book 19 – A Luciferian Tragedy

Hmm.

Book 19. Oh dear …

Blake’s 7 was a series I was hooked on as a kiddie. It was about a band of intergalactic freedom fighters … well ok, a bunch of criminals who were on the run from the all powerful and totally evil Federation who wanted to take them down.

There was a lot of nonsense in Blake’s 7 with the storylines, as is typical for 70s/80s scifi but you had excellent characters, a classic ship and a couple of remarkable computers. It lost a bit in series 4 (spoilers) but it was still a massive highlight when it came on. I must watch the dvds again at some point.

The theme tune was magic too.

This book is about one character in particular, Kerr Avon and is written by the actor, Paul Darrow. It’s published by Big Finish Productions and I’m now incredibly wary about reading any more of their books. The only thing consistent with the series here are the names of the characters Avon and Servalan. Servalan is consistent … but then it doesn’t take much to portray true, ruthless and vicious evil. Avon is a bit different. The series Avon could handle himself in a fight but preferred to avoid fights … This Avon is a one man unstoppable army.

The setting is different, almost nothing of the technology and universe of the series is carried through to the book. Instead, we have technology that doesn’t make sense. A galactic current that carries ships. Helijets going between planets. And other daft stuff that’s just …. rubbish.

So if Big Finish have allowed this book to come out … and it’s part of a series, what are they doing with their other books ? Are their Doctor Who books actually Doctor Who ?

At the moment, I’m not too interested in checking them out. You could say that the disastrously bad novelisation here is the fault of the author. But I’d prefer to point the finger at the quality control. This particular book shouldn’t have been released with the Blake’s 7 label on it.

The story is actually fairly reasonable … but it doesn’t belong in the Blake’s 7 universe. I seem to remember saying that about another film/series too quite recently ! Wish I could remember what :-).

On a better note ….

Book 20 is Blake’s 7 Afterlife by Tony Attwood who compiled the B7 Programme Guide. When the characters were introduced, they were instantly recognisable. I haven’t seen B7 in years but when … characternameredacted … spoke, I pictured him in my mind saying the words with the character’s mannerisms.

More about Afterlife later. Gotta read it first ! :-).

Boaty Exhausted

I had an unscheduled and a bit spur of the moment visit to Cardiff yesterday …

Whales in Wales ! And boats too. The Volvo Ocean Race is in town at the moment for the Cardiff stopover. Just two more legs to go in this race and it’s been good to be able to follow it closer than previous editions. Things like twitter and Facebook help out a lot there.

One comment before I go any further – if you’re interested in going to see the Race Village, go now. They’ll be gone on Monday.

Don’t miss the boat ! So to speak.

The village is a fair distance by foot from the car parks though so be prepared for that. (Don’t do what I do and neglect your fluids and calories, I was impaired and close to flaking out)

A nice view out over the bay.

An odd looking building. Knowing Cardiff’s Doctor Who heritage, has it been inspired by the aliens ?

Remember the fallen. This is a WW2 merchant sailors memorial, click for bigger and hopefully legibility on the writing.

I passed by more bones and relics of things long gone. These must have been crane anchor points ? The shore side seemed a bit too shallow to support ships and boats getting in close enough to offload.

There was a decent bit more walking to go from here. This is a different boat shed with a Volvo Ocean Race sign on it.

The most interesting thing in the village for me was a cutaway yacht, showing how the boats are designed. It was a bit of a revelation for me as it corrected errors in the mental map I had for where things were on board. I never realized that the interior would double back underneath where the crew stand and control the rigging and rudder.

Hopefully these will never need to be used, although it was sad to hear of the tragic loss of one of the sailors in the Southern Oceans this year.

The compartment above the engine is where they sleep and forward (right of pic) is the storage and the loo. Aft (left of pic) is the hatch to the outdoors. Bit ickle !

A view of the deck, plus a little bit of the detailing involved. Keep the design neat, understandable and it’ll be easier to keep it in good condition and to fix it if it breaks. The domes aft are for the communications, safety and global navigation systems, with the compartment below the deck being where the navigator lives.

A view from the inside. I didn’t explore too much because it was a shoes-off area and the carbon fibre floor was very slippy.

Engine ! Not to be used for moving the boat, although that’s possible if they lose the sails. This gives power for the systems on board, both electrical and hydraulic. The modern ocean racing yachts use a canting keel. A conventional yacht keel is a big mass that’s suspended directly below the boat. It acts as a counterweight when the boat heels over to stop it from capsizing. A canting keel can change the angle, swaying to port or starboard (left or right!) to gain more weight advantage from the mass.

Translation – it swings left and right and makes the boat faster … but needs hydraulic power to make it work.

A view from the helm. The pillars and levers in the centre are where the grinders operate the winches that trim the boat and raise and lower the sails. You can see the little void in the centreline where the ropes run to the rigging.

But where are the boats ? They said there would be boats !

I’ve been following Turn The Tide On Plastic most of all, here is their stern. There were lovely sounds coming from the water lapping at the boats.

That’s Scallywag,

A few more of the boats,

Vesta’s 11th Hour,

A better look at TTOP,

There’s AkzoNobel, a company which provided most of the high technology materials, knowledge and design that goes into these boats,

Mapfre,

Dongfeng and …

Turning back for a better look at Team Brunel’s boat. We could get reasonably close access to the boats but the general public was kept away from the jetty where they were moored up.

This looked incredibly tempting and my brain was trying to get me to partake. I should have listened ! :-D.

Back to the old. I wonder how long it has been since these gates were opened. They serve no purpose now, except for tide barriers, as they have filled in the channel behind the bridge I took the picture from.

Merchwise, the village is quite poor. They have bags, waterproofs, hats, more hats, beanies, shirts and the rest but it’s very expensive. I’m not paying £30 for a hat. I didn’t come away empty handed though :

Think he needs a booster seat. I then disappeared off to the Happy Place :

Which had the desired result :

They’re a friendly bunch in there and the girl who was on the till was very keen to talk about Star Wars things.

Fun afternoon/evening out, although I was a bit too late to raid the music shops of Cardiff for a few things I’d like to get hold of. My legs hate me at the moment though. Too much unaccustomed :

They’ll get over it and I could do with having more exercise. 😀

Nostalgia themes

A surprise late post !

A surprise to me too … (I should really be heading off to bed now).

Reading the Blake’s 7 book made me think back to some of the themes that heralded those great … and not so great shows. The ones you still vaguely remember now, even years after the programme finished airing.

What themes ? Here’s the Blake’s 7 theme. A great opening and a well crafted finish. Check out those state of the art BBC special drama budget graphics. This programme was never about the graphics though, it was about the interplay between the characters. Would Vila run ? Would Avon turn on everybody ? How irascible would Zen and Orac get ? How much trouble would the idealistic Blake get ? Great show. I was glued to this one as a kiddie.

I was also glued to Battle of the Planets. Yep. Nostalgia – check. A great show for after school. Oh and then there’s Dogtanian (It’s awful isn’t it …) for when we moved back to England. I’d rush back from school for that pup. I never got back in time for Mysterious Cities Of Gold, although I have the dvds which I haven’t managed to watch yet. Ulysses 31 was a highlight too.

I hear Thundercats is coming back too. Hey look ! It’s a Dungeons and Dragons ride. Classic comics.

And this one was pretty bad but spawned it’s own legends. It’s the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

This was from the days when the programme makers would quite happily dedicate a minute or two of their 25 minutes to an intro theme to show you all the characters again.

Back to the more adult stuff …. I adored Battlestar Galactica, the original movies. It took a while before I could catch up on the series though. It didn’t matter that the space effects sequences were used, reused and recycled thousands of times, it felt and looked great.

And then there’s Knight Rider, the unmistakeable Woo Woo and futuristic music of its intro launching the Hoff on his career.

Yep. We had some very silly telly on every week in the 80s.

Not quite so silly in set up but extremely silly in its episodic plotlines was Space 1999. Sadly didn’t have the scripts to back up Moonbase Alpha’s setting. I loved the Eagle spacecraft. Very utilitarian, very flexible. It was a while before I got to watch this on reruns though.

Talking of silly …. Captain William “Buck” Rogers had a freak mishap, freezing him so that he would reappear … to save Earth in the 25th Century with faithful sidekick robot Twiki.

There were many more too, like Sapphire and Steel which I really need to try and watch again.

One that I have enjoyed coming back is Macgyver. The new remake series has been an excellent update.

Right – I think it’s getting too late for me to think of more to post. But if you need them and if you can find them, maybe you can hire … The A Team.

And a late add on. How could I forget to include Doctor Who ? Here’s the Tom Baker intro.

Book 18 – Babylon’s Ashes … and a holiday

Feels weird to be going back to work tomorrow !

Also hot. It feels a bit too warm at the moment.

Book first. I’m up to Book 6 in the Expanse series. I’ll slow down now though because 2 books haven’t been written yet and the 7th is still more expensive than I want to pay. (Handy tip – don’t rush to spend cash if you don’t have to).

I’m always a bit wary about doing the book reviews because of the spoiler potential. Nobody wants the spoilers. That reminds me ! Must check what someone thought of the Solo movie. I was underwhelmed, although that could have been due to being in the low side of my particular mental cycle. It felt like a movie that was out to tick as many lore boxes as it felt it had to, without any particularly good inspiration of its own. Rogue One was a far better movie for me, I must watch it again soon.

Anyway ! The Expanse.

Book 6 moves on the story with more in the tale of the Free Navy. It feels like these books are going to be in a series of 3 acts, with each act being 3 books. This book and the previous one massively redraw the map of the Expanse universe and this one wraps up a few threads from before … including a death of a major character. That’s one thing about the Expanse novels, you never really can tell if people are going to be safe although I get the feeling that the core 4 characters will survive all the way through to the 9th book which may owe a lot to the series origins as a role playing game.

I felt that Book 6 was a better book than number 5, which had a particular job to do … and I’ll be looking forward to when book 7 goes a little cheaper.

I need to figure out which book is next actually … as I suspect that I’ll finish my current book tonight if I get to the reading of it. More on that another day.

Holiday stuff :

Should have done some work around the house – didn’t. (This is probably what generates the low mood – guilt).
Healing up – to an extent, although I really need to leave my legs alone so they have a chance to heal.
Games – Battletech is still awesome and … I have reactivated Warcraft.
Addiction – Warcraft is very addictive. I’m almost at level 110 already and somehow managed to find a Legendary item. That’s two for my characters !
Video watching – I’ve caught up on the youtube watching … Well, at least as far as I take it. I avoid watching multiple series of the same game at the same time. It gets confusing.

And general me – I feel a bit more rested, although heat tends to beat rested feelings out of me quite quickly.

Anyway – Expanse Book 6. A worthy continuation of a very good series of books so far. It evolves its situation and its world but doesn’t break it like some series of novels I know.

Recommended !

Comic Con Expedition 2018

Comic Con again !

This one felt better somehow. Whereas we’d normally have finished up before the show was over and on our way, this time the 5pm closing time came as a great surprise. It definitely crept up on us.

Oh and I have loot too …

Perhaps not as utterly packed as some years but still plenty to see. Lots to look at.

Curious people making their way around the exhibition. Whatever could be in that case ?

Who will he next be smuggling across the galaxy ? When all else fails, send in the Wookie.

Maybe it was this strange lovely creature ?

Don’t let the Red Mandalorian find her …

This fella just wanted hugs.

Lovely merch on display.

And a little more too.

And some lovely people selling the merch too.

Definitely good for a ride home.

There were many shiny things.

Keep an eye open for the Family.

Although sometimes, deadly opponents can put their feuds aside for a time.

Two heroines on their way to save the world.

And if they can’t save it, then they shall secure the rebirth of the world. (Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn, a great take on post-apocalyptic games).

Possibly the best cosplay of the day, this is Gaige from Borderlands 2. I quite enjoyed playing this character during the time I had in the game.

And there is always a need for a humble hero and his pig.

Definitely a need for more shiny things.

I came away with a little bit of loot :

The mini Lego XWing in the pic above, plus a small adorable Toothless. I also acquired another mug which may find it’s way into work next week. And a t-shirt which will definitely join the round of subversive Friday t-shirts.

I also picked up my next book, a Blakes 7 follow up by Paul Darrow aka Kerr Avon which should be good.

A good day out. I’m still tired now though !

Book 17 – Redshirts

I have to admit, I’m falling behind on the books again.

But I’m still reading far more than average :-). It’s been good to get back into the regular reading again.

The latest book is Redshirts by John Scalzi, which I actually finished about a week or so ago.

Great book ! I shall be checking out more from the author. I’d thoroughly recommend this one as a light hearted bit of fluffy scifi.

What’s it about ? You know the Star Trek trope where the Captain and his Bridge Crew go down to the planet, dive into the dangerous situation and they all come back alive except for the security people wearing the red shirts ? Yep. This book is about the people wearing the red shirts.

It introduces its premise straight away, with an ill fated away mission. And then it bridges forward to a future where the main characters, new recruits to the ship, are introduced.

The characters quickly figure out what’s going on. Their ship, the Intrepid, has a vastly higher death rate than the rest of the ships in the fleet. Except for core members of the crew that is. This leads to the rest of the crew attempting to avoid those core members as much as they can. Because if they are noticed or become part of an away team, death is likely to follow.

The book is heavily about our set of red shirted lieutenants and ensigns and enlisted and how they figure out what’s going on with the story then leading them into what they plan to do about it. Can they change their fate before they too join the ranks of the red shirt fallen ?

That’s for the book. I could see where the book was going but the fun bit was in the what do they do about it ? I didn’t really see that coming and it was highly amusing.

But the author is a massive troll ! I’m not saying why. Ok. The ending is … a tad different to the normal for a book like this. Kinda … sudden :-D. I’ve said too much there.

It’s a fun book ! And I bet any Trekkie would get a kick out of it.

Next up is Babylon’s Ashes, book 6 in the Expanse series and the last one I’ll read for a while. I’ll hold off on getting the rest until they get cheaper. No need to pay £10 on a book that will be much cheaper in a few months, especially as there are another couple in the series afterwards. I can wait.

I don’t think I can wait until leave happens though. I didn’t think I was burnt out this time around but I think it’s crept up on me. I’ll be glad to chill out for next week, although there are things to be sorted out. Definitely looking forwards to Comic Con on Sunday and there will be pictures ….

I wonder what we’ll find there ?

Gaming Meme

Yep.

Spotted a meme again and I must complete it ! Wot da meme ?

As usual, click for bigger and legibility. Here goes !

1 – Very first video game. Not sure here, quite likely to be Kingdom on the BBC Micro, this came with the machine. May also have been arcade video games.
2 – Favourite character. Commander Shepard of the Normandy. That’d be Femshep, as Jennifer Hale has a voice with gravitas. You can wholeheartedly believe that Femshep could take on the galaxy and win, plus that voice has been amazing throughout many of the games I’ve played.
3 – A game that is underrated. Hmm … perhaps Planetbase. People didn’t like this one but I found its moon base building to be captivating … once I figured out its foibles and intricacies.
4 – Your guilty pleasure game. I think at the moment this is Battletech. A lot of that is down to the sound design. The weapons sound properly chunky and befit their size. They’re 1 tonne, 5 tonne, 20 tonne lasers, missiles and cannons and when they hit an enemy mech, it properly sounds like irresistable force is meeting immovable object. I just love the sound in this game.
5 – Game character you feel most like (or wish you were). My Elite captain commander. Because I would like to be cruising the spaceways, plying my trade amongst the distant stars. Perhaps this is one motivation towards wanting to live on a boat.

6 – Most annoying character. Any character that you have to escort. Case in point today while doing a Battletech escort mission. The characters you escort either linger behind slowing you down or race off ahead into danger that you can’t get them out of. I only lost one of the escortees today but that still smarts.
7 – Favourite game couple. Mordin and Eve from Mass Effect 3. Enemies from history who come to know each other in an immensely touching way.
8 – Best soundtrack. There are a few … Machinarium has a couple of gems, Factorio has a lovely ambient, FTL has an excellent intro that switches on chill out mode for me. But Battletech’s soundtrack superbly sets the mood and the Stellaris soundtrack is particularly stellar. So to speak.
9 – Saddest Scene. Mordin going up into the Tower. I’ve played through this myself and watched two streamers play. I will tear up at this scene and the emotional power of this and other scenes in Mass Effect 3 are probably why I have only played that game once.
10 – Best Gameplay. Deus Ex Human Revolution. It doesn’t do everything but it does it in a fashion that was definitely not repeated in the follow up game.

11 – Gaming system of choice. PC all the way. It has the flexibility that consoles don’t have.
12 – A Game everyone should play. Star Wars Pod Racer. Especially for those who hated the movie.
13 – A Game you’ve played more than 5 times. This is an odd one because there are story based games which don’t benefit from this and high score type games where you go in again to beat your high score. In terms of playing through a story multiple times, I’d call up Neverwinter Nights, which I played repeatedly with different character types. Perhaps once or several times with mage, warrior, rogue, cleric, paladin etc. For high score games, there is Moo, Moo2, Stellaris, Defence Grid …
14 – Current video game wallpaper. My desktop is told to point at my Elite screenshots folder. There are lots of very pretty images in there.

15 – Post a screenshot from a game you’re playing right now. Well … no game at the moment (I … kinda need the screen for writing this? 😀 ) but :

Mech Battalion on the charge.
16 – Game with the best cutscenes. One thing about World of Warcraft were the epic cutscenes rendered in the engine. Memorable.
17 – Favourite Antagonist. The moment when the Reaper Sovereign reveals itself in Mass Effect was incredible. Here it is. Our heroes come face to face with an implacable machine intelligence utterly confident in its own superiority, its mission and its assurance of success with that mission. A mission that will lead to the extinction of all spacefaring life.
18 – Favourite Protagonist. I think this has to be Paragon Shepard again, with the paragon being the choice of heroic actions, to save the galaxy in style righting all wrongs and helping all those who need help.
19 – Picture of a game setting you wished you lived in. To the Elite folder again !

Elite is quite pretty.
20 – Favourite Genre. One that isn’t done so much now, although it’s coming back. Space flight games. I’ll also indulge in the empire strategy games, usually in space again, plus tower defence as an unexpected choice here.
21 – Best story. Mass Effect … hands down. The Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3 story is legendary.
22 – A sequel that disappointed you. After loving Deus Ex Human Revolution, the sequel Mankind Divided was far too buggy and I gave up on it early. Also Mass Effect Andromeda … because it was messed about with too much by EA and … it just didn’t work. Too grindy and a weak story.
23 – Best art style. Couple of things here, you can judge a game by how it looks now or how good it looked compared to the capabilities of the time. Doom and Quake looked great when they first came out but are horrifically bad now. I’d actually describe Battletech as plain, the graphics could have been better … but its gameplay is very good. I think Deus Ex Human Revolution here, it looks amazing in its stark neon orange style.
Edit – a bit more thought and : World of Warcraft. It has a characteristic cartoonish style with massive shoulders and various exaggerations. It looks great and watching a couple of streams of it made me remember the draw of the game, which is partly down to how it looks.

I need to find my best WoW screenies again.
24 – Favourite “Classic” Title. Hmm, PC classic would be Master of Orion 2. Atari ST – Elite. BBC Micro – either Elite or Revs.
25 – A Game on your list to play. I think this has to be Surviving Mars and Deus Ex Mankind Divided. Both games are ones I should get a lot out of but I bounced off them hard when I first played them.
26 – Best Voice Acting – anything with Jennifer Hale in and Elias Toufexis (Adam Jensen) is rapidly joining that. I love Claudia Black’s voice in gaming too, she played Morrigan in Dragon Age Origins plus an insane Quarian Admiral in Mass Effect. And then there’s everyone’s favourite Quarian, Tali’Zorah. She joins the crew as a girl/young adult on pilgrimage and grows into a leader of her people. And throughout, the face is hidden behind an environment suit mask but you hear that wonderful voice :

One reason why Mass Effect has its special status with gamers is that voice acting. It is incredible.
27 – Most Epic Scene. I’m going to have to be careful or this will be a Mass Effect love in. A lot of the closing scenes from the 4 games quality here. They’re amazing. Yep. Climax scenes of Mass Effect 1, where you have a battle raging outside the station, with your character fighting their way through the inside of the station. The two battles are interwoven and I choose the first game because the scene comes to a very satisfying conclusion. I wasn’t quite so taken with the climax of games 2 or 3.
28 – Favourite Game Developer. At the moment I think that’s Paradox, although they’re more publisher than developer at the moment. Honorable mentions go to Playsport Games for Motorsport Manager, Harebrained Schemes for the Shadowrun games and Daylight Studios for the Holy Potatoes games. I must play Holy Potatoes, We’re In Space (a game I acquired via Humble Monthly)
29 – A game you were surprised you liked. Tricky, because I don’t acquire games unless I’m sure I will like them … and I will have checked out the game play before hand via videos. Star Trek Timelines and Idle Champions here. Timelines is one I enjoyed but walked away from due to pay to play mechanics. Idle Champions is one I keep running far more than is healthy.
30 – Favourite Game of All Time. Oh my … which one to pick ? XCom is amazing. Stellaris had me solidly addicted until v2.0. Moo2 is legendary. Neverwinter Nights was a solid favourite. Then there’s the Pod Racer game, Tie Fighter, World of Warcraft …

The list goes on. The thing is to not have a favourite game of all time and just stick at that game, that’ll get boring. Be open to new games, new genres, new styles. Enjoy the gaming. I loved Mech Commander 2 … and Battletech is a natural progression. I’m hoping the forthcoming Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries will be good as I really enjoyed MW2 Mercenaries. The various Elite games have been excellent progressions on the games that came before.

It’s a shame they stopped making XWing and Tie Fighter games, with the apex of that series arguably being Tie Fighter (the games that came after introduced unnecessary and annoying complication). Moo3 and the new Moo aren’t as good as Moo2.

Best game of all time – MASS EFFECT !

You knew that was coming right ? The game I’m playing at the moment though is Battletech, with a hint of Skyrim and Kotor 2. I don’t think I’ll play the Mass Effect games again, although they do have the memories.

I think it’s time to stop posting and grab more snacks. Enjoy your gaming !

Bugs – Kill it with fire ! And Plastic

I’m mourning my Battletech campaign.

(picture credit – a Lt Saatch on the Battletech tabletop game forums)

It has hit its end due to a gamebreaking bug. It has a monthly cycle where you pay for upkeep including the wages for the pilots and the maintenance on the ship and mechs.

Trouble is, there is apparently a (hopefully not too) common circumstance where the counter can break. The monthly counter then goes into negative numbers, blocking the queue for repairs to mechs and upgrades to the ship. Yep. It’s a game breaking bug.

I think what caused it with me was having a pilot die in one of the story missions, when the monthly counter was rolling over. Oh well.

The thing to remember is – it’s just a game. Even if you’re quite well addicted to it and are not quite sure what else to dive into … it’s just a game. (Video game addiction can be very tricky, I’m avoiding Stellaris for similar annoyance reasons but I know that if I try Stellaris again, it could well be a 4am or later finish).

But an untimely end to a game campaign doesn’t mean you can’t try and have some fun with it as a last hurrah until they patch out the bug.

Enter the Locust Horde.

One of the achievements for the game is “Plague of Locusts”, where you aim to win a 4v4 skirmish with the lightest mechs. I refitted mine with flamethrowers. Heat is a mechanic in this game, fire jump jets or weapons and heat will build up. Too much heat and ammunition can explode and the mech will shut down. The internal chassis will melt.

Good times.

And toasty fire.

 Satisfying fire.

Kaboom fire.

I ran 3 skirmishes involving these mechs. They managed to take out one enemy in a random battle and although they damaged the rest of them, they couldn’t bring any of them down.

I tried a fight with long range Locusts vs these little devils … they melted. So I switched the sides around and got the win and the achievement.

Hopefully they patch this particular bug soon. If not, it means an unsatisfying time save scumming (reloading to erase failure or mistakes) to avoid pilots dying and even there, the bug can trigger. I’d been trying to avoid that this time around, accepting the occasional death of pilots as part of the story. Dekker died in the first battle, Medusa soon followed and later poor old Samnite who went out in a blaze of glory, rushing the enemy captain in her mech and melting it like the Locusts were doing above.

The tactic worked … but it cost the company a Samnite.

The story of your characters and mechs is part of the charm of games like these. The faithful mechs that keep on dishing out the pounding. The ones like Breath of Tiamat which did a lot of damage but also needed more time in the shop than any other. Light of BB-8 (a mech with big lasers) was doing well, as was Howling Thunder, Hissing Typhoon (first Heavy mech) and the Light Light Show.

I know, my selection of names is really, really bad.

Like the availability of plastic recycling ! (How’s that for a seismic shift in subject !)

I took my empty plastic bottles to the local supermarket on Thursday, hoping to get rid of them all. Imagine my surprise when … the hole to put the bottles in is smaller than the bottles.

That’s just plain weird. And it’s indicative of stupid policy when it comes to environmental matters. It’s why we throw things in the bin instead of disposing of them as the crusaders would like us to.

(I have a likely solution and it’ll probably involve the cinema on Friday pm, so all good).

I’m watching gaming and reading tonight instead of diving in for more but I suspect the bug in Battletech will mean my Skyrim and Kotor 2 characters will see more time put into them and their story.

It is frustrating when bugs like this happen. But it’s just a game.
